Giving a Wood Children’s Table New Life

Our son was given a small wooden table that was missing a few pieces and wasn’t very functional. The cutouts on the top of the table were awkward and toys would get stuck within and it was difficult to get them out.  We refurbished this wood table into a more functional piece.  The wood table now enables our son to sit at it and read his books, color or eat his snacks.

We first disassembled the original table, cleaned up some of the nicks and sanded out some imperfections.  Once we had the original table’s pieces to a point where we were ready to work them, we set out to incorporate new accents, trim and a new handle into the drawer.  We capitalized on the opened areas of the existing table and turned them into a functional storage area.

Adding Wood Accents to Tie It All Together

We added wood accent buttons and a leaf detail accent.  Along with those touches, we also added stained wood trim to the bottom of the drawer area.  The trim around the top of the wood table is also stained the same color as the bottom wood trim.  To tie the piece together and make the storage drawer easy to access, we added a handle.  That handle is a mix of black metal, that matches the black supports that attached the drawer to the top, and wood which is stained to match the other stained wood trim.

We knew that the top of the children’s table is the most important piece to get right, as it will take the most abuse.  The top is fashioned from a nice piece of birch wood and trimmed it out with the stained wood.  To protect the top, we treated the birch wood top with wood wax.  This treatment allows the top to stand up to the tests of time and as well as a toddler.  Spilled milk, crayon marks and the orange cheese from Cheetos all wipe up easily thanks in part to the wood wax.
